Dr. Koichi Wakata received B.S, M.S., and Ph.D. from Kyushu University. He worked as a structural engineer for Japan Airlines from 1989 to 1992. He was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1992, From 1992 to 2016 he worked at NASA Astronaut Office and served in various duties including Chief of Space Station Operations Branch, NASA instructor astronaut for robotics, EVA and CapCom. He served as JAXA ISS Program Manager from 2016 to 2018 before he was assigned as JAXA Vice President and Director General, Human Spaceflight Technology in 2018. He flew in space four times on Space Shuttle, ISS, and Soyuz. He assumed command of ISS Expedition 39 in 2014 and became the first Japanese ISS Commander. He has accumulated 347 days 8 hours 33 minutes in space.
