Visitors to Taiwan must obtain a visa or authorisation in advance, unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries or countries whose nationals are eligible for visa on arrival. All visitors must hold a passport with minimum validity of six months as of the date of entry.

The official language is Mandarin Chinese; however as many Taiwanese are of southern Fujianese descent, Minnan (the Southern Min dialect or Heluo) is also widely spoken. The smaller groups of Hakka people and indigenous tribes have also preserved their own languages. Many elderly people can also speak some Japanese, as they were subjected to Japanese education before Taiwan was returned to Chinese rule in 1945 after the Japanese occupation, which lasted for half a century.

The most popular foreign language in Taiwan is English, which is part of the regular school curriculum. However, for your own convenience, when taking a taxi in Taiwan, it is advisable to prepare a note with your destination written in Mandarin Chinese to show the taxi driver.

Taiwan enjoys warm weather all year round. Weather conditions fluctuate during spring and winter, while in summer and autumn the weather is relatively stable. Taiwan is extremely suitable for travellers. Spring begins from March, and is the best time of the year to visit Taiwan, as the weather is pleasant and cool.

The annual average temperature is a comfortable 22 degrees Celsius with the lowest temperatures on the lowlands generally ranging from 12 to 17 degrees Celsius (54-63 Fahrenheit).

The currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (NT). Bills come in denominations of NT$2000, NT$1000, NT$500, NT$200, and NT$100; while coins come in NT$50, NT$20, NT$10, NT$5 and NT$1 denominations. The exchange rate is about: US$1 = NT31.75

Foreign currencies can be exchanged at government-designated banks and hotels. Receipts are given when currency is exchanged, and must be presented in order to exchange unused NT dollars before departure.

Major credit cards such as American Express, Master Card, Visa, and Diners Club are accepted at department stores, restaurants and hotels.

In Taiwan the standard voltage is 110 V. The standard frequency is 60 Hz. The power sockets that are used are of type A / B.

Tipping is optional. However, it is still common to tip restaurant waiters and hotel porters. A customary service charge of 10% is applicable in hotels or restaurants.

High Speed Rail

With the opening of the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR), visitors can now easily take a day trip between Kaohsiung and Taipei. Currently eight stations are operational on the THSR line along Taiwan’s western corridor: Taipei, Banqiao, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan and Zuoying (Kaohsiung), and three more are in the planning stage.


Most drivers do not speak English, hence visitors are recommended to have hotel personnel assist in jotting down your destination, hotel name and address and the project cost of each trip for your convenience.

Department stores, retail shops and restaurants are open almost daily. Shops typically starts operating at around 11am, but do note that the time still varies from business to business. Government offices and banks mainly operates on Monday to Friday, from 9am onwards.
